The Contra Costa (CA) Times (12/30, Rodriguez) reports that the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency “has asked STEMI – or ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction – receiving centers in the county to establish therapeutic hypothermia protocols.” The protocols “are expected to be in place by Saturday, said Dr. William Koenig, the agency’s medical director.” Research has “shown that in certain instances patients who had therapeutic hypothermia – reducing the core body temperature – had better outcomes than those who did not, Koenig said.”
